The Blackwell Cup
Penn vs. Columbia and Yale

- The Penn heavyweight rowing team takes part in the Blackwell Cup in Orchard Beach, N.Y. The Cup, contested between Penn, Columbia and Yale, has been won by the Bulldogs the past three years. The Quakers are looking to improve upon last week's second-place performance at the Childs Cup against Princeton and Columbia. In that race, the Quakers edged out Columbia by about two seconds in the varsity 8.

LAST SEASON - Yale made it three in a row and easily won the Blackwell Cup in 5:49.9 over Penn's 5:53.1 Columbia was well back in a third-place 6:01.3.

THE HISTORY - The Blackwell Cup was first contested in 1927 and has traditionally been awarded to the winner of the race between Penn, Yale and Columbia. It was established in memory of George Engs Blackwell, an 1880 Columbia graduate. The Quakers have won the Cup 32 times, one fewer than Yale. Columbia has won it just three times, the last in 1941. In the past decade, Penn and Yale have split the Cup, with each winning five of the last ten races.
