PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing varsity 8 edged out Columbia to capture second place in the Childs Cup race on Lake Carnegie Saturday.
With both the Lions and the Quakers well back of Princeton's 6:21.5 first-place pace, the Quakers hung in to finish in 6:42.5, 2.3 seconds up on Columbia. The race was rowed in a stiff headwind with moderate chop.
Penn's only other race of the day turned out to be its best. The freshman 8 racewas a highlightfor Penn as the Quakers emerged on top in 6:42.0, 2.9 seconds ahead of Princeton and well ahead of Columbia's 7:14.1.
Penn did not contest the second varsity 8.
The Quakers stay on the road to race in the Blackwell Cup at Columbia April 15.
