Heavyweight Falls to Northeastern in Burk Cup Battle

Boston – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team was unable to snap Northeastern’s streak of Burk Cup victories, falling to the Huskies this morning on a very windy Charles River. Both teams fought shifting, 20 mph cross-head and cross-tail winds throughout the course.

Third-ranked Northeastern, winners of the last four Burk Cups, won by more than three lengths in the varsity eight with a time of 5:52.4. No. 11 Penn finished with a time of 6:07.5.

The Red and Blue took the novice eight with a time of 6:00.6 to edge the Huskies who rowed in with a 6:02.5.

In the second varsity, the Quakers posted a time of 6:13 but it was not enough as Northeastern clocked a time of 6:09.6 to remain undefeated on the season.

Northeastern’s win brings their Burk Cup total to 17 victories, while Penn has captured 19 cups.

Penn is back in action on May 15 at the EARC Sprints. The Quakers last Ivy League race will take place on May 22 as they challenge Cornell for the Madeira Cup.
