Worcester, Mass. The heavyweight freshman eight finished fourth at the 2005 Eastern Sprints this afternoon on Lake Quinsigamond. The second varsity placed ninth overall while the varsity eight captured the Third Level Final to finish 13th overall.
The Quakers’ freshman eight placed fourth in the Grand Final with a time of 5:45.368. It was the best finish by a Penn freshman boat since 1997 when the Quakers captured the Grand Final. Brown took the event in 5:41.782, while Princeton was the runner-up in a time of 5:42.755. Harvard finished third in a time of 5:43.303. Earlier in the day, the Red and Blue advanced to the Grand Final by edging Princeton by less than two-tenths of a second for a victory in their heat. Penn posted the winning time of 5:52.183 while the Tigers time was determined to be 5:52.367.
The second varsity eight finished ninth overall after placing second in the Petite Final. Boston University took the petite final in a time of 5:46.180 while Penn clocked a 5:50.173. Cornell won the Grand Final with a time of 5:41.622. Earlier in the day, the Quakers posted a time of 5:55.841 to finish third in its heat behind Yale (5:47.358) and Princeton (5:49.348) to advance to the Petite Final.
The varsity eight captured the third level final in a time of 5:45.537 to finish 13th overall. In their first heat of the day, Red and Blue advanced to the third level final with a time of 5:51.255.
Penn closes out the 2005 season on May 22 as it challenges Cornell for the Madeira Cup on the Schuylkill River.
