Heavyweight Places Third at Childs Cup

Camden, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team, ranked 15th in the nation, placed third at the Childs Cup this afternoon on the Cooper River. Top-ranked Princeton captured the Cup, while Columbia placed second.

Princeton proved to be a very tough competitor as it captured the varsity eight in a time of 6:07.7. Columbia was the runner-up with a time of 6:21.9, while Penn finished in a time of 6:23.7.

The day was highlighted by the Red and Blue’s impressive novice eight victory. The Quakers rowed a time of 6:20.1to finish6.2 seconds ahead of Princeton (6:26.3). Columbia placed third in a time of 6:45.

In the second varsity race, Princeton again proved to be tough capturing the event in a time of 6:26.4. Penn was the runner-up with a time of 6:40.0 while Princeton’s third varsity recorded a third place finish with a time of 6:58.0.

Penn is back in action on April 16 as it travels to New Haven, Conn. to challenge Yale and Columbia for the Blackwell Cup.
