Heavyweight Rowing Begins 2012 With Three Races

Boatings For The Weekend

Penn is back on the water in a big way this weekend, launching its 2012 heavyweight rowing season with three races. Up first for the heavyweights is a regatta with Georgetown on Friday in Cherry Hill, N.J. On Saturday, Penn engages in the latest installments of two Cup races, competing against Northeastern in the Burk Cup and George Washington in the McCausland Cup.

Last year, Penn won both the Burk Cup and the McCausland Cup races, and the Quakers will be looking to repeat those wins as part of a busy weekend.

The Red and Blue defeated George Washington on the Potomac River last March, the first win in the McCausland Cup since '07 for the Quakers. The Varsity Eight navigated the 2000-meter course in 5:40.3, besting the Colonials by a full seven seconds. The McCausland Cup is in its nascent stages as part of Penn's annual schedule, with just four incarnations. The two schools have split the four races, and this will be the first race in the Cup series away from either the Schuylkill or Potomac Rivers.

While the McCausland Cup is a young event for the Quakers, the Burk Cup with Northeastern has a richer history, and Saturday's race will be the 44th installment of the series started in 1970. The Quakers have won 19 of the previous 43 meetings, with a victory last year on the Schuylkill ending a nine-year drought for the Red and Blue. Penn won by 1.5 seconds last season, a margin of victory that ranks eighth-closest in the history of the event. Saturday's race on the Cooper River will be the first held away from the normal waters of the Schuylkill and Charles Rivers.

Penn's spring season gets underway on Friday when the Quakers row against Georgetown on the Cooper River. Frequent rivals at Eastern Sprints, IRAs and numerous fall regattas, the Quakers and Hoyas will meet in one-on-one racing Friday afternoon. Last year at Sprints, Georgetown's Varsity Eight edged Penn by five seconds in their heat race and at IRAs, Penn was edged by just .625 seconds by Georgetown in their repechage.
