Heavyweight Rowing Bested by Wisconsin

In its final tuneup before the IRA Championships next weekend on the Cooper River, No. 14 Penn went stroke for stroke with No. 6 Wisconsin in the varsity eight for much of the 2000-meter course before the Badgers pulled away by just over a length at the finish line. That was one of two close battles on the day as the Quakers showed they will have something for the field next weekend at the national championships.

After Wisconsin had to re-rig its varsity eight boat following an equipment break during warmups, the Quakers and Badgers pulled away from Drexel at the start of the race, Penn holding within two seats of Wisconsin at the 1000-meter mark. The Quakers never let the Badgers out of their sights, allowing Wisconsin only a 3.4-second win - just over one boat length. Wisconsin's winning time was 5:48.1 to Penn's 5:51.5 while Drexel was third in 6:11.8.

In the frosh eights, Penn and Wisconsin were again even in the early portion of the race, but the Badgers pulled away at the end for a 6.5-second win over the Quakers with Drexel in third. Wisconsin utilized a lack of wind to finish in 5:54.90 to Penn's 6:01.4 with Drexel third in 6:09.7.

The Quakers will conclude the 2012 season May 31-June 2 at the IRA Championships in Cherry Hill, N.J.
