PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team had four of its five boats earn medals at the 2015 Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on Saturday, led by gold medal performances in the Championship Fours and Club Eights races. In addition, the Varsity Eight showed itself to be the class of the collegiate field, only finishing behind its neighbors racing for Vesper Boat Club.
In the Championship Eights race, Penn’s crew was second overall – and the top collegiate entry. While Vesper Boat Club was victorious, the Quakers were the strongest collegiate competitors, finishing 2.01 seconds ahead of Drexel and 3.65 seconds faster than Georgetown.
The Red and Blue won the gold medal in the Club Eights race, as the crew coxed by Lauren Hochman and featuring Torin DiSalvo in the stroke seat were dominant to the tune of a 13.5-second victory over Delaware. Penn’s winning time was 12:48.63. Penn’s second entry in the Club Eights completion was fifth overall.
Penn’s freshmen eight took home the silver medal on the Schuylkill River, finishing behind Princeton. Penn crossed the finish line in 13:01.27, just under five seconds behind the Tigers who finished in 12:56.53.
The second gold medal of the regatta for the Quakers came in the Championship Fours where Penn’s heavyweight crew coxed by Sabrina Stanich and featuring Torin DiSalvo in the stroke seat secured a 4.38-second win over Penn’s lightweight team.
The Red and Blue return to racing November 1 in the Princeton Chase.
