PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s heavyweight rowing team flexed some muscle on home waters to begin the fall portion of the 2014-15 season, winning four of five races at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Varsity Eight finished in a tie with Navy for first place, each crew needing 12:11.81 to navigate the three-mile course. The tie for first position gives Penn a win in the Varsity Eight at Navy Day for the second consecutive season. The Quakers and Midshipmen were far and away the class of the field, each finishing over 14 seconds ahead of the third-place boat.

Both of Penn’s JV Eights finished inside the top four of a 13-boat field, Penn’s “A” boat earning the victory in a time of 12:39.05. The Red and Blue outdueled a pair of Naval Academy boats for the win, Navy’s “A” boat taking second in 12:40.77 and Navy’s “B” boat in third.

Saturday’s regatta was a great welcome to collegiate racing for Penn’s freshmen as the Quakers claimed victory in the Frosh Eights. Penn’s ‘A” boat was first in a time of 12:54.54, beating Navy’s “A” boat by just over 14 seconds.

The morning began with Varsity Fours, and Penn took the top two spots on that race. The “A” crew was first, crossing the line in a dominant 13:47.63. The next closest finisher was Penn’s “B” boat, almost 25 seconds after the victors.

The Quakers will be back in action next weekend at the 50th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 19.
