Heavyweight Rowing Finds Success at Sprints

WORCESTER – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team had positive results from its veteran crop of rowers as well as its rookies at EARC Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond as the Varsity Eight recorded its best finish since 2007 while the frosh eight medaled for the first time since winning the novice race in 2006.

The freshmen, seeded fourth before the regatta, were third in the Frosh Eight, well ahead of Cornell to secure the bronze medal. Two weeks ago, the Quaker frosh were defeated by the Big Red by almost two seconds. At the end of April, Penn’s rookie crew were just 0.6 seconds ahead of Navy. On Sunday, Penn crossed the finish line almost 13 seconds ahead of the Midshipmen.

The 1V put together its highest finish at Sprints since 2007 when the Quakers also took ninth. The Quakers entered the regatta as the No. 9 seed and lived up to that pre-race prognostication with a third place row in the Second Final. The 1V challenged in its morning heat, but could not secure one of two transfer spots into the Grand Final. In the afternoon, Penn was third to Navy and Columbia, but closed an almost nine-second deficit to the Midshipmen at the end of April into just a 2.5-seconds margin. The Red and Blue were 1.1 seconds ahead of Cornell, more than flipping a 1.8-second loss just two weeks ago. The Quakers also were well clear (2.6 seconds) of Dartmouth which had finished ahead of Penn in the morning’s heat.

All four of Penn’s boats which raced in 2014 and again this year at Sprints – 1V, 2V, 3V, 1F – finished higher than they did last year. The 2V was also ninth overall this year, up from 13th last season. The 3V was 13th last year, but improved by one spot for a 12th place result this year.

Penn will await its final list of entries into the IRA National Championships Regatta which starts May 29 in Mercer, N.J.
