PHILADELPHIA – The final regatta of the 2015-16 heavyweight rowing season looms for the University of Pennsylvania as the Quakers prepare for the IRA Regatta June 3-5 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Penn’s Varsity Eight enters IRAs ranked No. 11 in the country in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll after a ninth place finish at EARC Sprints on May 15.
The Red and Blue were 11th in the Varsity Eight last year, its best finish since 2012. Overall, the Quakers finished 10th in the Ten Eyck standings for overall performance, and Penn earned the Clayton Chapman Trophy for largest improvement in the team standings from the previous regatta.
A main reason for Penn’s successful 2015 IRA Regatta was the performance of the Frosh Eight. The rookies were third in the Grand Final last year, earning Penn’s first IRA medal since 2006.
This year, Penn will enter a Varsity Eight, Second Varsity, Third Varsity, and a Varsity Four.
Rowing begins at 8:30 a.m. on June 3 with the Varsity Eight heats. All heats and repechages for the heavyweights will take place on June 3, with semifinals taking place on June 4. Championship Sunday is June 5, with the Varsity Eight Grand Final set for 12:30 p.m.
