Heavyweight Rowing Set For Adams and Burk Cup Races

PHILADELPHIA – Penn is back on the water this weekend hosting two events on the Schuylkill. On Saturday, Penn hosts the Adams Cup against Harvard and Navy. The following day features the Burk Cup with Northeastern.

Adams Cup Information


Penn, Harvard and Navy have competed in the same regatta since 1928, alternating between the home rivers of each school. In 1933, the winner of the regatta was presented with the Adams Cup, named in honor of Charles Francis Adams, a Harvard graduate and former Secretary of the Navy. Penn has won the Adams Cup 16 times, last doing so in 1999 on its home River, The Schuykill.

Last Year...

After a close start to the varsity race, Harvard pulled away in the final 500m to win in a time of 6:07.0. Navy finished in second at 6:15.3. The Quakers finished in third place with a time of 6:23.4. The Crimson had a stellar day, winning all five races held on the Charles River.

Burk Cup Information


Since 1970, Penn and Northeastern have competed for the Burk Cup, named in honor of Joseph Burk, W’34. Burk rowed for Penn from 1931-34 and coached the Quakers from 1950-69. Penn has claimed the Burk Cup 18 times, last doing so in 2001 on the Charles River in Boston.

Last Year...

Northeastern won last season’s races with a time of 5:54.7, defeating the Quakers by three seconds in the varsity eight race. In the second varsity competition, the Huskies also picked up the win with a time 6:04.6, six seconds ahead of the Red and Blue.
