Heavyweight Rowing Set for Childs Cup Saturday

PHILADELPHIA -The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team looks to make it three-for-three this spring in Cup races on Saturday as the Quakers will row for the Childs Cup with Princeton and Columbia on Lake Carnegie.

The Red and Blue moved up two spots this week in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, checking in at No. 8 among heavyweight crews following a win in the Burk Cup over then-No. 7 Northeastern. On Saturday, Penn will contend with a No. 3 ranked Princeton crew and a Columbia contingent which enters the weekend ranked No. 18.

In 1879, George W. Childs, owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, presented a challenge cup for rowing competition in four-oared races to Columbia, Princeton and Penn. One of Penn’s first intercollegiate races, the Childs Cup, was won by the Quakers that year. In 1889, the Childs Cup was changed to an eightoared event. Cornell, Navy and California have been invited to participate in the Cup race.

Penn has won 45 Childs Cup races all-time, two behind Princeton's 47 for the all-time lead in the series. Columbia has reached the finish line first in the race 12 times.

The Tigers have won the last five Childs Cup races, including a 7.3 second win last year. The Quakers were second on the Schuylkill River last season, winning a tight battle with the Lions by 0.8 seconds. Penn's last win in the Childs Cup came in 1993.
