Heavyweight Rowing Set for San Diego Crew Classic

PHILADELPHIA -The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team will head west this weekend for the 42nd San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay.

The Quakers will send two boats to the regatta, competing in the Varsity Eight and the Second Varsity Eight. The Red and Blue will first hit the water at 8:24 a.m. PST on Saturday for the Varsity Eight heat, followed by a 9:36 a.m. PST launch for the 2V.

The Quakers are ranked No. 13 in this week's USRowing Collegiate Poll, No. 2 California headlines the field at the San Diego Crew Classic, with No. 10 Navy, No. 11 Stanford and No. 18 Drexel also in the mix as ranked teams. The University of British Columbia and Grand Valley State are also entered in the Varsity Eight.

The Varsity Eight has seven total boats entered, and all will move on to the Grand Final on Sunday as Saturday's heats are for lane determination only. The Quakers will be in a heat with Cal and Drexel. Last weekend, the Quakers had the better of the Dragons as part of the McCausland Cup.

The 2V is part of a 14-boat field, and will race in the third heat alongside Stanford, Santa Clara and UC-Irvine. The top two in each heat will move on to Sunday's Grand Final.
