Heavyweight Rowing Splits Cup Races; Retains McCausland Cup

CHERRY HILL – It was a split for Penn on the Cooper River Saturday, retaining the McCausland Cup against George Washington in the afternoon following a close loss to Northeastern in the Burk Cup in the morning.

Waters were choppy with a pretty strong tailwind over the final 1,000 meters, but it was the Quakers who navigated the course to a first-place finish against the Colonials, winning the McCausland Cup for the third consecutive year. In the Varsity Eight, Penn was nearly a ten-second victor with a finishing time of 5:57.1 to George Washington’s 6:06.4. The Second Varsity race also went in Penn’s favor via an 11.5-second margin, while Penn’s A boat in the Frosh Eight race was 6.4 seconds ahead of its B boat and 11.8 seconds ahead of George Washington’s entry.

In the morning, Northeastern was a winner by 3.1 seconds over the Quakers in the Burk Cup, crossing first in a time of 5:46.1 to Penn’s 5:49.2. The Huskies won all three eights, and took the Varsity Fours for the second day in a row.

The Quakers are off until April 6-7 when the varsity heads to San Diego for the San Diego Crew Classic.
