Heavyweight Rowing Third in Blackwell Cup

DERBY, Conn. – No. 10 Penn finished third of the three teams in the Blackwell Cup on Saturday, edged by one second by No. 14 Columbia for the runner-up spot to No. 4 Yale on the Housatonic River.

The V8 hung tight with Yale to start the race, pushing the Bulldogs through the first 1000m before Yale pulled away and Columbia was able to eke out the one-second win.

The Quakers were able to pick up two wins in the day’s races, though, winning the Second Varsity and the Fourth Varsity. Penn’s 2V was the winner of the day’s tightest race, defeating second-place Columbia by 0.9 seconds and third-place Yale by 2.5 seconds. The 4V race was a head-to-head duel between Penn and Columbia, the Quakers holding open water in a 3.1-second win.
