PHILADELPHIA On a beautiful day that kicked off the unofficial start of summer, the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight rowing team won the Madeira Cup over Cornell Friday morning on the Schuylkill River. For Penn, it marks the first time they have won the cup since 2001.
The varsity 8 won a very tight race, crossing the finish line just over a second ahead of the Big Red. Penn came in at 5:59.0 while Cornell came in just behind at 6:00.2.
Cornell took the second varsity 8 and open 4 races handily, but the Quakers freshman 4 were victorious. Penn beat the Big Red by 12 seconds, coming in at 7:06.
Penn will close out the 2007 season at the IRA Regatta in Camden, N.J. from Thursday through Saturday.
