Heavyweights Dedicate Bergman Shell on Class Day

PHILADELPHIA – March 26, 2016 was a momentous day for the University of Pennsylvania’s heavyweight rowing program as over 400 Penn Heavyweight Rowing alumni, family and friends gathered at the Madeira Boathouse for the program’s annual Class Day activities. This year’s record attendance was in large part due to a shell dedication in honor of former Penn Heavyweight Rowing Coach Stan Bergman.

This year’s event started with remarks from Nicholas B. Paumgarten Head Coach of Heavyweight Rowing Geoff Bond and Director of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. M. Grace Calhoun. Following their comments was the dedication of the Stan Bergman shell as well as a surprise shell dedication in honor of alum, former coach, and current parent Bruce Konopka W’78.

“It was heartwarminh to see the alumni turnout and energy on Saturday” noted Dr. Calhoun “Our alumni are passionately rooted in Penn Rowing, and I am grateful to be serving with such a committed group.”

As is tradition on Class Day, the juniors and seniors dueled on the water and the senior class claimed victory. Following the student-athlete competition was the annual Alumni Regatta which featured 10 crews this year. The 10 crews of alumni oarsmen were each presented with Penn Rowing shirts for their efforts in the regatta.

“Class Day 2016 was one for the books, I am humbled by the opportunity to celebrate the history of our program by honoring legendary former coach Stan Bergman” said Geoff Bond. “The number of alumni, family and friends with us to celebrate Penn Rowing was astonishing and I look forward to building off of this momentum as our team enters the racing season”.

The Heavyweights open the spring season on the Schuylkill River this weekend with the Burk Cup. The full spring season racing schedule can be found by clicking here.
