CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team opened the first season under new head coach Geoff Bond with the 51st Head of the Charles Regatta on the Charles River in Cambridge.
The Red and Blue’s Varsity Eight rowed in the Championship Eights race, and finished 15th overall – 13th among American collegiate boats. The Quakers, a mostly new crew from last year’s Varsity Eight, were well ahead of Navy.
Last year, Penn was 20th overall in the Championship Eights and had a similar finish of 13th among American collegiate crews. Penn was 17th at the three-quarter mark of the race this year, but had the seventh-fastest finishing split to make up some ground.
The Varsity Four competed in the Championship Fours event, and placed 12th overall and 10th among American collegiate boats. Penn’s four finished in a time of 17:03.098, less than three seconds off of Harvard’s crew and over 13 seconds ahead of Cornell.
The Quakers will take to home waters of the Schuylkill River on October 24 for the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta.
