NEW YORK, N.Y. - With the Blackwell Cup on the line, the University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight rowing team placed third behind Columbia and Yale Saturday night at Orchard Beach Lagoon, N.Y.
Columbia and Yale were able to pull away from the Quakers in the Varsity 8 race with sub six-minute times. With the Red and Blue clocking out at 6:07.8, the Lions won the event 5:54.0 with Yale finishing close behind at 5:56.8.
With the sun setting, conditions were nearly perfect throughout the regatta. Penn's First Freshman crew had the second-best time for any Quaker boat with their second-place finish at 6:11.7. The team finished comfortably ahead of the Lions, but were beaten to the finish line by Yale at 6:05.5.
The Third Varsity finished second in 6:30.3 for the Quakers, while the Second Varsity placed third, crossing the finish line in a time of 6:18.0.
Next week, the Quakers will head to Annapolis, Md., to take on Navy and Harvard for the Adams Cup on Friday and then compete for the Burk Cup on the Schuylkill River Saturday.
