PHILADELPHIA --While the conditions were optimal on Saturday for Penn's final heavyweight rowing race of the regular season, the results were not ideal as No. 11 Penn was edged by No. 10 Cornell in the Madeira Cup on the Schuylkill River.
The Quakers were 1.8 seconds behind the Big Red in the Varsity Eight, finishing in 5:37.2 to Cornell's 5:35.4. No. 14 Dartmouth, not a regular competitor for the Madeira Cup, joined in the race and finished third. Penn was 2.3 seconds ahead of the Big Green.
Cornell swept all five races, Penn taking second in the Second Varsity and finishing runner-up in the Frosh Eights.
The Red and Blue are back on the water May 17 for EARC Sprints in Worcester, Mass.
