Heavyweights Take 11th at Princeton Chase


PRINCETON - After a surpise wintry mix on Saturday cancelled racing at the Head of the Schuylkill, the heavyweight rowing team took advantge of a day better suited for racing on Lake Carnegie in Princeton as part of the Princeton Chase.

The varsity eight took 11th over the three-mile course. finishing in a time of 13:44.90. The Quakers were in a tight battle to finish inside the top ten, bested to that finish by ninth-place Navy (13:41.30) and 10th-place Georgetown (13:42.82). Penn was almost four seconds ahead of 12th-palce Syracuse (B boat) and beat out Ivy foe Dartmouth (16th) by almost 12.5 seconds.

In the fours, Penn took 14th with a time of 15:26.41. Penn outstroked Navy's B boat to take 14th while also beating the A boat from springtime foe George Washington and eastern rivals Georgetown, Holy Cross and Temple.

The novice eight was ninth in its race, needing 14:29.38 to navigate the course. The Red and Blue won a three-team sprint to the finish, beating out boats from George Washington and Delaware to claim ninth.

The varsity boats are wrapped up for the summer, but the novice crews will head to Rutgers for a freshmen-only regatta next Saturday.
