Heavyweights Take Second in Blackwell Cup

PELHAM, N.Y. - The Penn heavyweight rowing varsity 8 took second place in the Blackwell Cup Saturday, beating Columbia but falling to Yale on the Orchard Beach Lagoon.

The Quakers finished in 6:20.12, comfortablyahead of Columbia's 6:26.96. The Bulldogs crossed the line first in 6:09.80.

In the highlight of the day for Penn, the freshman eight cruised toa 10-second victory over two Yale crews and Columbia. The Quakers (6:16.08) beat out Yale's top freshman boat (6:26.82)for the win to continue a successful spring campaign for the freshmen.

The Quakers continue on the road April 22, racing in the Adams Cup against Navy and Harvard in Annapolis.
