Heavyweights Third at San Diego Crew Classic


SAN DIEGO – No. 12 Penn was strong in its first trip to California for competition since 2009, taking third in the Copley Cup Varsity Eight Invitational at the 40th San Diego Crew Classic.

After taking second in a heat race on Saturday, the Red and Blue were third behind a pair of Top-10 crews in Sunday’s Final. No. 3 California and No. 9 Stanford were the top two finishers, the Golden Bears winning the race in 5:45.4, well clear of the second-place Cardinal who needed 5:49.7 to navigate the course.

The Quakers were engaged in the closest battle of the race, besting British Columbia by 0.31 seconds for the third place result. Penn’s third-place time was 5:57.67 to British Columbia’s 5:57.98. Oregon State (6:05.92) and No. 19 Gonzaga (6:12.17) were behind by open water from the heated race for third.

On Saturday, lane assignments for the final were determined with a pair of three-boat heats. The Quakers were in the second heat, finishing second to No. 9 Stanford. The Cardinal were first in 5:52.27, just over 2.6 seconds ahead of the Red and Blue’s 5:54.92. Oregon State was third in 6:05.21.
