Heavyweights Win Varsity 8 Race in Fall Debut

PHILADELPHIA - In the first Fall regatta of the year, the University of Pennsylvania heavyweights won the varsity 8 race and posted several other top five finishes at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River Saturday.

The Quakers won the varsity 8 race by several seats over Navy. Those two boats had plenty of open water between them and the rest of the field. Penn topped the other 31 boats with a winning time of 11:40.37 which was three seconds better than the Midshipmen. The Red and Blue also finished fifth in the race with a time of 12:05.09.

Penn was the runner up in the 4+ race with a time of 12:44.31. They were the only challenger to Navy, who eventually pulled away for an open-water win. Those two boats were the only ones to break 13 minutes in the race. The Quakers also placed third (13:03.10) and fourth (13:27.45).

In the freshman 8 race, the Quakers were third behind Penn's lightweight boat and Navy. The Red and Blue were just a few seats behind the Midshipmen with a time of 12:12.72. In the other freshman race, the Quakers placed three boats in the top five of the 4+ final. Penn's top boat finished in 13:49.41.

Following the races, all three Penn rowing programs hosted parents fora dinner and tour of the new indoor training facility in the Hutchinson Gymnasium. The dinner took place in The Palestra.

Next weekend, the Quakers travel to Boston for the prestigious Head of the Charles on Sunday, Oct. 20.
