PHILADELPHIA - It’s the biggest weekend of the indoor track and field season in the Ivy League as the University of Pennsylvania women’s team heads to Cambridge, Mass., to compete in the Heptagonal Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 28-March 1.

Events at Gordon Track, located on the campus of Harvard University, begin on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the pole vault and conclude with the 800 meters portion of the pentathlon at 6:40 p.m. Meanwhile, Sunday’s slate of events kicks off with the triple jump final at 11 a.m. and ends with the mile relay at 3:15 p.m. The awards ceremony for the meet is scheduled shortly thereafter at 4:30 p.m.

Penn brings a young squad to the championships this season with freshmen composing of one-third of its athletes traveling to the meet.

“We have a young group, but the freshman are a great bunch and have been doing well this season,” said head coach Gwen Harris. “If we come out, work hard, and compete, I know we’ll have a good meet.”

All eight Ivy League schools will participate in the League’s championship event, which promises to be hotly contested among the Ancient Eight members.

“This is one of the best meets I have ever seen. The excitement, camaraderie and head-to-head matchups are almost incomparable,” Harris said of the Heptagonals.

Last year in Ithaca, N.Y., Princeton outlasted the field by a narrow margin en route to winning its seventh overall Indoor Heptagonals crown. Penn will look to improve upon its fifth-place finish from last season.

The Quakers travel to Cambridge on the heels of a first-place team finish at the Virginia Duals on Feb. 14. Seniors Kinjal Parikh (mile), Leah Brogan (3,000 meters) and Camille Richard (triple jump), as well as junior Anna Aagenes (800 meters), all came away with individual titles. The team’s strong showing was particularly evident in the triple jump, where Richard, junior Kathryn Gevitz and freshman Catherine Okoukoni placed first, second and third, respectively.

Complete results from the meet will be available on PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of each day’s events.
