PHILADELPHIA - In 2005-06, the respected wrestling website InterMat.com revived the All-Effort Team, whichwas originally established by John Fuller after the 2000 NCAA Championships in St. Louis and ran for three years. This year, Penn All-America Matt Herrington is one of 20 wrestlers to be named to the squad, one first-teamer and one honorable mention in each weight class.
According to Intermat.com, "the All-Effort team is not about winning a national championship; it is about performing at another level come tournament time. Some wrestlers had subpar seasons and turned it on at the NCAA Championships, while others needed an early loss to change their mindset and adjust their performance. Others earned their respect with fine performances, and such performances put their school on the map, at least in the wrestling realm."
A junior, Herrington finished fifth at 174 pounds at the NCAA Championships, coming back after a second-round loss to earn All-America honors. Both of Herrington's losses at NCAAs came to Hofstra's Mike Patrovich; he went 6-0 against the rest of the field, culminating in a pin of Lehigh's Travis Frick (who had defeated Herrington twice this season) in the fifth-place match.
