TULSA - Penn's Hicham Laalej advanced to the second round of the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships on Monday with an upset win over the 31st seed in the tournament, Andres Carrasco of Arizona. Laalej, the 105th-ranked men's player by the ITA, defeated Carrasco, the 81st-ranked player, 6-0, 6-3 to move on.
Laalej will play the winner of the match between Ohio State's Shuhei Uzawa and Jacksonville's Jordi Ballester in Tuesday's second round.
The All-American Championship is considered the most competitive collegiate tournament in the country, with past winners including professionals James Blake, Bob Bryan, John IsnerandMaliVai Washington.
