PHILADELPHIA - In Sunday's finals at Penn's 14th Annual Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational, freshman phenom Connie Hsu captured both the singles and doubles championships, teaming up with senior captain Alexa Ely.
Hsu and Ely topped Binghamton's Jillian Santos and Yulia Smilnova, 8-6, in the title match. The pair worked their way through the brackets, overcoming four competitive teams along the way. Hsu put the final match in the books on a blistering ace.
With just a short rest, Hsu hit the court again, facing Maryland's Ana Belzunce in the singles championship. Winning the first set, 6-3, the No. 4 freshman in the country blazed her serve past Belzunce on match-point again to win 6-2, and sweep the titles on straight sets.
The duo of junior Daniela DePaoli and freshman Stephanie Do also played well in the invitational, making a run in the doubles bracket. The pair reached the semifinals before falling to the Binghamton runner-ups, 8-2.
The Penn women's tennis team is back in action next weekend when they compete in the Saint Joseph's Fall Invitational.
