PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Connie Hsu extended her fall season a week ago with her win at the ITA Northeast Regional and will now compete in the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning Nov. 4.
Hsu will complete in the singles draw of 32 at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, New York. She is just one of two Ivy players to be included in the exclusive draw which features nine of the nation's top ten players as ranked by the ITA.
The freshman received an automatic invitation to the Championships after going through ITA Northeast Regional at Dartmouth without dropping a set. In the semifinals she breezed past Molly Scott of Dartmouth, 6-0, 6-0, but faced a tougher opponent in the finals. Against Binghamton's Anna Edelman, she took the first set 7-5 and then captured the second, 7-6, by winning the tiebreaker in convincing 7-0 fashion.
She is the first Quaker to play in the National Indoor Championships since Alice Pirsu reached the second round in 2002.
Opening round draws will be posted after 6 p.m. on Wednesday and play begins Thursday. Participants, draws and results will be available here during the competition.
