PHILADELPHIA - During the ECAC Gymnastics Championships last Saturday, Amber Hu and Kelly Tan were named ECAC Scholar Athletes of the Year for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and contributions to Penn gymnastics. In order to win the award, athletes must keep a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Hu, a senior from Acton, Calif. won the award for the second year in a row. The Quakers co-captain competed in bars turning in a 9.700 and beam scoring a 9.625. Hu has been one of Penn's most consistent performers this season, leading the squad through both events.
A junior from Los Gatos, Calif., Tan has enjoyed a great bounce back season after not being able to compete in 2015 due to injury. She has been a mainstay for the Quakers on beam, setting her new career-best at Rutgers on Feb. 20, scoring a 9.750. She repeated that score at the ECAC Championships and took 10th overall.
As a team, Penn scored over 193 for the first time this season with a 193.050 and took home the third-place trophy.
