NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Stephanie Do and Alex Ion advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA/USTA Northeast Regional at Yale Friday, highlighting the Penn action from a very difficult day one. Do and Ion won both of their doubles matches together and will advance to the Round of 16. Both of Penn's other doubles pairings were eliminated with first round losses to pairings that would also make it to Round of 16. In singles, none of Penn's three players in qualifying made it into the main draw after dropping matches against players that all qualified for the main draw.
Do and Ion got the day off to a great start with a dominating 8-1 victory in the first round over their opponents from Manhattan. Going up against a Fordham pairing in the Round of 32, Do and Ion would be tested, but still came out with the 8-4 win to move on and advance against a seeded pairing from Fordham. They will be back in action tomorrow against another seeded doubles team. With a start time of 8 a.m., Do and Ion will take on seventh-seeded Khymylev/Kelleher of Boston College.
Coming in seeded fourth, Jaime Yapp-Shing and Sol Eskenazi fell victim to the early round upset. Playing their opponents from UMass to a 7-7 tie after 14 games, the unseeded pairing would take the next two games and the match by a 9-7 final to advance. The UMass pairing would prove its worth in the next round with an 8-4 victory to move onto the Round of 16.
After not knowing whether or not they would be playing doubles, Daniela DePaoli and Emma Whitfield drew the sixth-seeded pairing from Yale in the opening Round of 64. They would fall 8-1 in the doubles tournament. However, like every other opponent that defeated Penn on Friday did, they would win their next match, this time by an 8-4 final, moving into the Round of 16.
The day got off rough start in singles with each player facing against tough opponents that would go on and advance into the main singles draw. DePaoli, who was seeded fourth in the qualifying draw, got her day off to a good start with a pair of 6-4 victories to move into the second round of qualifying singles. Against her second round opponent, Choloe Pike (Stony Brook), DePaoli jumped out to the quick lead with a 7-5 win in the first set. However, her opponent would come back and take the final two sets, advancing past DePaoli and into the singles main draw.
After playing just two singles matches this fall, Yapp-Shing found herself paired against a seeded opponent in the first round. She would come up just shy in the first set, falling 6-4, and would drop the second set by a 6-2 score. Her opponent from Cornell would advance to the singles main draw with another win in the second round.
Like Yapp-Shing, Whitfield found herself paired up with a seeded opponent and down early after losing the first set, 6-4. Her opponent would take the next set to move into the second round of qualifying singles and hold her seed, advancing to the singles main draw.
With each of the three players in the qualifying draw being eliminated on day one, Penn has three players who automatically qualified for the singles main draw still alive. Those three, Eskenazi, Ion, and Do, will each get their singles tournaments underway tomorrow. Eskenazi and Do received seeds and automatic byes into the round of 64. Do will play her Round of 128 match tomorrow morning.
The ITA Regional again gets started at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning. In singles, the Round of 128 and the Round of 64 will be contested. In doubles, they will play just one round in each of the four remaining days of the tournament. Tomorrow the Round of 16 will take place, which will be the first eight matches contested.
