Philadelphia University of Pennsylvania senior Izu Emeagwali was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after an outstanding performance on Feb. 12 at the Lafayette-Rider Invitational.
The Rockaway, N.Y. native led the way for the Quakers by capturing the 55m dash and the 200m run and qualifying for ECACs in both events. In the 55m, Emeagwali tied a school record with a time of 7.21 seconds. She followed that performance by clocking a time of 25.07 in the 200m to post the second-fastest in the Penn record books. Emeagwali was also part of the victorious 4x400m relay team that set a new Penn record with a time of 3:48.84, eclipsing the mark of 3:48.88 set in 1997. For her efforts she was also named Penn's Student-Athlete of the Week.
Emeagwali has made her mark in the Penn indoor record books throughout her career posting 10 top-ten times in the sprint events. She also is the current record holder in the 60m dash with a time of 7.78 seconds and was on the distance medley relay team that set the school record of 11:29.66 and won the ECAC’s in 2004.
The Quakers are back in action on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27 as they travel to Cambridge, Mass. for the Heptagonal Championships. The ECAC Championships will be held March 4-6 in Boston, Mass.
