PHILADELPHIA Penn junior guard Ibrahim Jaaber was named first-team All-Big 5, it was announced today. He is joined on the first team by a trio of Villanova players -- Randy Foye, Allan Ray and Kyle Lowry -- as well as La Salle's Steven Smith and Temple's Mardy Collins.
Jaaber, the Ivy League Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-America selection,had the best scoring average by a Quaker(18.2 ppg) since Hassan Duncombe in 1989-90, and broke his own school and Ivy League records with 93 steals. Jaaber's 3.3 steals per game average was fourth in the nation. Jaaber is the first Penn player to receive first-team All-Big 5 honors since Ugonna Onyekwe in 2003, and the 23rd player in Quakers history to be so honored.
Penn junior forward Mark Zoller was named to the All-Big 5 second team along with La Salle’s Jermaine Thomas, Villanova’s Mike Nardi, Temple’s Antywane Robinson and Chet Stachitas of Saint Joseph’s. Zoller ended the season as the Ivy League's leading rebounder.
In addition to his first-team honors, Villanova’s Foye has been voted the Philadelphia Big 5’s Outstanding Player of the Year by the Herb Good Basketball Club. He will receive the Robert V. Geasey Trophy at the Club’s 61st annual banquet onMonday, April 17, 2006 at Colleen’s, 22nd Street and the Parkway.
