PHILADELPHIA - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced its All-District Teams Wednesday afternoon, and a pair of Penn players were honored in District 3. Senior guard Ibrahim Jaaber was a first-team selection, while fellow senior Mark Zoller was given second-team status.
A total of 150 athletes were selected in 15 districts, with five players in each district earning first-team honors and five earning second-team.
Jaaber, the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2005-06, is averaging 16.0 points per game this season and leads the Quakers and the Ivy League with 144 assists and 82 steals. He has 290 career steals, which is the Ivy League record and tops among all active NCAA Division I players. Jaaber is also averaging 4.2 rebounds per game this season, and is among the Ivy League leaders with a .529 shooting percentage.
Zoller leads Penn in both scoring (18.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg); his scoring total tops the Ivy League, while his rebounding average is third in the conference. Overall, the senior forward is among the conference’s Top 10 in seven categories overall, and a staggering nine categories when Ivy-only games are considered. Zoller has put up 10 20-point games this season, and has seven double-doubles.
Jaaber joined the following players on the first team: Curtis Sumpter (Villanova), Aaron Gray (Pitt), Ahmad Nivins (Saint Joseph’s) and Frank Elegar (Drexel).
Zoller joined the following players on the second team: Mike Nardi (Villanova), Dionte Christmas (Temple), Geary Claxton (Penn State) and Jason Thompson (Rider).
Penn concludes its home season this weekend, hosting Yale Friday at 7 p.m. and Brown Saturday at 7 p.m. at The Palestra. The Quakers (19-8, 10-1 Ivy League) are looking to clinch their third Ivy League title and NCAA Tournament berth in a row with a win over Yale Friday night.
