MADISON, N.J. Penn men’s fencing team traveled to Madison, N.J. on Saturday to participate in the 2008 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Quakers had five fencers place in the top ten of their weapon. The group is led by Jonathan Berkowsky, who won nine bouts on the day to finish in second place in men’s sabre. He was joined in the sabre top ten by Matthew Kolasa (six wins and a fifth-place finish) and Andrew Bielen (four wins for a tenth-place finish).
Ben Wieder entered the regional seeded eighth in men’s epee, and won eight bouts to earn a third-place finish the highest in epee for the Quakers.
Senior captain Ron Berkowsky drew the number one seed in men’s foil based on his performance during the regular season, but ended the day in fourth place with eight wins, three behind top finisher Nicholas Chinman of Penn State.
The Quakers await word on the selection to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio March 13-16. Selections to the NCAA Championships are determined on a weighted seeding system based on performance throughout the season and a fencer’s results at regionals.
