Juniors Rule at Class Day Regatta

PHILADELPHIA - This past Saturday, the Penn women’s rowing program hosted its Class Day races, during which alumni came out to cheer on boats that were crewed by the respective classes.

In conditions that were very windy, eights consisting of the senior, junior, sophomore and freshman classes raced a 1,500-meter course on the Schuylkill River. The juniors took top honors, clocking 5:08.8 to defeat the seniors by nearly eight seconds. The sophomores were third (5:21.2), while the freshmen were fourth (5:36.9).

“The fact that we practically havefour full classes of boats is a huge step forward for our program,” said head coach Mike Lane, who is in his second season. “The women really enjoyed racing in class boats, and it was a spirited and exciting race to watch. Once that junior boat took the lead they were not going to give it up.

“We would like to thank our alumni who came out to cheer on the women.”

Penn will head to Gainesville, Fla. this weekend for spring break training, concluding the trip by competing in the Clemson (S.C.) Challenge on the way home. That race will feature the host Tigers, Penn and Indiana, and will take place Saturday, March 15.
