PHILADELPHIA -Saturday brought more snow and strong winds to a Philadelphia region battered by a tumultuous month weather-wise. What better way for the Penn women's rowing program to hit the Schuylkill River for its annual Class of 2009 Class Day Trophy race?
The annual event, pitting the classes against each other in a 1,500-meter race, gained a trophy this year that was donated by the Class of 2009, giving an "official" title to the festivities.
Racing against a strong headwind, and that pesky snow, the junior class eight took top honors with a time of 5:25.8. They finished seven seconds ahead of the seniors (5:32.8), and 13 seconds ahead of the sophomores (5:38.7). The freshman eight was fourth in 5:45.7.
This marked the second straight year that the Class of 2011 won the event; they also took first place last year as sophomores.
"The weather added and element of surprise to Saturday's racing, but what a great day -- snow, wind, and good hard rowing," said head coach Mike Lane. "It is always fun to watch the classes come together with bragging rights for the entire year on the line. Congratulations to all the athletes on a spirited day of competition."
The women are preparing for their spring break training camp, which starts Saturday in Gainesville, Ga.
