MALIBU, Calif. - University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team senior Kana Daniel recorded a win in the first round of the 2016 Oracle ITA Masters on Thursday, defeating 28th ranked Katherine Ip of Rice. Daniel came back from down 7-5, 4-0 to win six straight games in the second set, before sealing the match with a 6-3 victory in the third.
Daniel also notched a win in the first round of mixed doubles, partnering with fellow Ivy League student-athlete Shawn Hadavi from Columbia. The duo defeated Speaks/Biosca of Furman/ETSU 6-4, before falling to the two-seed Shibahara/Redlicki of UCLA 6-3 in the second round.
On Friday, Daniel matched up against host Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey, the tournament's four-seed. The senior stumbled in the first set, falling 6-1, before pushing the second set to the distance, eventually falling 7-5.
Daniel and the rest of the Quakers will now set their sights on the ITA Northeast Regionals, which begin next Saturday, Oct. 20 on the campus of Yale in New Haven, Conn.
