Kemmerer Takes Second at Nittany Lion Open

2010 Nittany Lion Open Brackets

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - No. 20 Zack Kemmerer found himself in the finals at the Nittany Lion Open for the second year in a row, again having one of the best days by a Penn wrestler at an early-season tournament. However, for the second time in as many years, he fell one win shy of the title.

Kemmerer made a second consecutive run to the finals while winning four bouts by a combined score of 32-5. His day began with an 11-2 win over North Carolina's Rocco Wellek before an 8-2 win over Virginia Tech's Nicholas Murray earned Kemmerer a berth in the semifinals. In the final four, Kemmerer scored a 6-0 win over Trevor Melde from Rutgers. The match featured the No. 1 (Kemmerer) and No. 2 (Melde) ranked wrestlers in the EIWA Rankings, giving Kemmerer an edge in the conference scheme.

In the finals, Kemmerer ran into the buzzsaw named Andrew Alton. The 12th-ranked wrestler in the country at 141 pounds, Alton had pinned four of his five opponents on his way to the final. In the title bout, Alton added a fifth pin, countering a Kemmerer single-leg shot with a cement job and planting Kemmerer on his shoulders at 0:39.

Penn's other semi-finalist was Scott Giffin at 174 pounds. Giffin, ranked No. 9 in the country, won three bouts to make his way to the semis, before No. 14 Ed Ruth of Penn State scored a 6-2 win to move on to the final. Ruth had a 3-2 lead late in the match with riding time locked up and he countered a Giffin shot attempt for the final points. In the third-place bout, Giffin met long-time rival Alex Caruso of Rutgers. The two met last year at the Nittany Lion Open in the third-place match when Caruso wrestled for Lehigh. In 2009, Giffin defeated Caruso, 8-3. This time, Caruso got the win, 7-1.

Freshman Steven Graziano placed eighth at 197 pounds, finishing with a 2-2 day. He was forced to injury default in his consolation semifinal match after injuring his knee. Another freshman who had a good day was Canaan Bethea at 174 pounds. He won his first two matches before losing to Caruso. Bethea then won his first wrestleback match. At 184 pounds, Harrison Cook rebounded after dropping his first bout to win three wrestleback matches to finish the day with a 3-2 record.
