PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Jess Knapp and Jourdan Banks were announced on Friday as the team captains for the University of Pennsylvania women’s basketball team during the 2011-12 season.
"This is a well-deserved honor for both of them," head coach Mike McLaughlin said of the co-captains. "Jess and Jourdan have shown great leadership on and off the court, and have dedicated a lot of their time and effort over the last four years to improve as individuals and to help this program get better. I'm really proud of them."
Knapp is a returning captain from last season and a two-year letterwinner. After missing her freshman campaign due to injury, she has seen action in all 28 games the last two years, starting all but one last season. Knapp, who is a native of Carlstadt, N.J., has been one of the lead rebounders and blockers for the Quakers, finishing fourth in the Ivy League in blocks (38 total blocks) and sixth in rebounding (6.6 per game) last season. She was also second on the team in scoring (8.1 points per game).
Banks, also a two-year letterwinner who missed her freshman year due to injury as well, has played in a combined 51 games over the last two season. As a junior last year, the Foothill Ranch, Calif., native led all bench players in field goal percentage (38.9%) and free throw percentage (75.0%).
Penn opens its 2011-12 season at the Palestra on Sunday, Nov. 13 versus St. Francis (N.Y.). Tip off is at 2 p.m.
