Complete ITA Rankings
PHILADELPHIA The latest national rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), issued January 8, feature Penn’s top doubles team of sophomore Ekaterina Kosminskaya and senior Julia Koulbitskaya ranked 14th in the country. The duo jumped 39 spots from the preseason rankings which were issued in September.
The impressive jump in the rankings can be attributed to the duo’s stellar play in fall tournaments, where they won two tournaments the William and Mary Tennis Invitational and Penn’s own Cissie Leary Invitational. In the final of the William and Mary Invitational, they defeated the 12th-ranked team of Kaluder/Miseviciute from Arkansas. In addition, two of their three wins en route to the final were over teams ranked in the top 50. They also advanced to the semifinals of the ITA East Regionals.
Kosminskaya, the 2007 Ivy League Player of the Year as well as Rookie of the Year, is no stranger to doubles success. In 2007, she was part of Penn’s first doubles pair to qualify for the NCAA Championships. In the tournament, she and her partner, Maria Anisimova, were victorious in first-round action before losing in the Round of 16 to the 11th-ranked team from LSU. Kosminskaya joined with Anisimova to finish 46th in the final national doubles rankings. She was also named first-team All-Ivy in doubles in 2007.
Koulbitskaya, one of Penn’s tri-captains, has also achieved success playing doubles. She was named first-team All-Ivy in doubles in 2005 and 2006, and has twice won her doubles match in team competition in the NCAA Championships.
The duo will begin the 2008 season when Penn hosts Temple on February 2 at noon.
