PHILADELPHIA – Fresh off a breakout freshman season, Kyle Mautner of the Penn men’s tennis team was slotted No. 120 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings. The sophomore is one of just four Ivy League players placed in the national rankings.
Mautner, a first-team All-Ivy selection as a rookie, racked up 11 wins at the top of Penn’s singles lineup last spring. Playing against some of the best players in the nation, he notched triumphs over three players in the ITA Rankings (No. 74 David Biosca, No. 83 Leonard Stakhovsky, No. 88 Dovydas Sakinis). In addition, he was victorious over seven ranked teams, and clinched a pair of 4-3 wins for the Quakers. Mautner went 5-4 against Ivy foes, including a victory over fellow first-teamer Nicky Hu (Harvard).
In addition to the dual match success, Mautner also advanced all the way to the semifinals of the ITA Northeast Regional in October. He totaled a team-high 20 singles wins between last fall and spring.
Mautner and the rest of the Quakers will be in action for the first time this weekend at the Penn Invitational (Sept 16-18).
