PHILADELPHIA - Penn senior Hicham Laalej takes to the court in Tulsa Oklahoma on Monday to compete in the ITA All-American Championships.
Laalej made his first appearance of the year two weeks ago when he reached the semifinals in Flight A at the USTA Collegiate Invitational in Flushing Meadows. It was the senior's first competition in a year, following his recovery from a broken ankle.
Prior to his injury, he was a 2009 first-team All-Ivy selection and was ranked as high as 105th in the ITA National Rankings. Laalej is one of thee Ivy Leaguers to participate in the event, though head coach Nik DeVore acknowledged he isn't completely healthy.
"Hicham is probably at about 60 percent right now in his comeback, but he's slowly starting to find his range," said DeVore. "He just needs to get the match play and work through the soreness that will take placefrom being out of action for so long. It will take some time, but by the spring season Hicham should be back in top form."
