World Rowing U-23 Championships
PHILADELPHIA - Rising junior Parker Lange and assistant coach Colin Farrell will join rising junior Jacques David in representing the University of Pennsylvania lightweights at the World Rowing U-23 Championships in Linz, Austria, July 24-28.
"It's very exciting to have multiple Penn lightweights over in Austria this summer,"said Farrell, who is making his third straight stint as the coach and sponsor of the lightweight men's 4- boat. "I think it speaks well to the ability of the athletes that we have here on our team. The level of racing at the Under-23 World Championships is definitely a step-up, and it's a great chance for Jacques and Parker to see that next level of speed and test their abilities against some of the best in the world."
Lange earned his spot on Team USA in the lightweight 4x boat, while David was selected to the Australian under-23 lightweight team in the lightweight 2- boat. Both were members of the Penn varsity boat throughout the 2013 season where the Quakers reached the IRA regatta for the first time in three years and finished seventh at EARC Sprints. With David in the four seat and Lange in the fifth seat at the national championships, the Red and Blue won the petite final and finished seventh in the nation. That matched Penn's best IRA finish since the program was third in 2005.
"It's always a huge honor to represent your country in your sport," said Farrell, who is making his third straight stint as the coach and sponsor of the lightweight men's 4- boat. "And that goes for both the athletes and the coaches. I was fortunate enough to row on the U.S. National Team and this is a way for me to give back to the team now as a coach."
Farrell, Lange and David will also be joined by two other Quakers at the World Under-23 Championships. Daren Frankel of the heavyweights and Jenna Hebert of the women's rowing team will also represent the University of Pennsylvania.
