Late Rally Falls Short Softball Drops Two to Brown

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Due to unplayable field conditions, the University of Pennsylvania softball team played a doubleheader with Brown at Bryant University’s Conaty Park on Friday afternoon. Despite a late seventh inning rally, the Quakers dropped two to the Bears 6-1, 6-5. The Red and Blue will look to even out their weekend with a doubleheader at Yale on Saturday. On the day, both freshman Jurie Joyner and junior Korinne Raby hit .500, going 3 for 6 at the plate. Joyner added four RBI, including a three-run homer, while League leader sophomore Alexis Sargent hit a two-run homer to bring her RBI total to 23.

Game 1 – Brown (7-10, 2-3)
WP: Katie Orona (5-3), 7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K

LP: Alexis Borden (6-7), 6.0 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 7 K

It was a scoreless game until the top of the fourth when freshman Jurie Joyner drove sophomore Leah Allen home with a single up the middle and no outs. Despite junior Korinne Raby getting another hit and moving a runner to second, the Quakers were unable to add to their lead.

The 1-0 lead was short live, though. After allowing no hits through three innings, senior Alexis Borden surrendered the first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears capitalized on the momentum, scoring two runs to take the lead.

With bases loaded and one out in the fifth, the Red and Blue looked to add to the board and regain the lead. However, a play at home kept the run from scoring and an out at third followed, leaving three stranded on the bags.

Brown added to their lead in the bottom half of the inning, scoring one run, and added three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.

Penn had one final chance, and the top of the order was due at the plate. After two straight outs to short, junior captain Lauren Li came to the plate. While she went down swinging, the pitch went wild and she reached first safely. However, luck wasn’t on the Quakers side and the next out ended the game.

Game 2 – Brown (8-10, 3-3)
WP: Jessica Cherness (3-3), 7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K

LP: Alexis Sargent (2-1), 2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

The Red and Blue were once again on the score board first after sophomore Alexis Sargent cleared the high fence in left field, giving the League leader two more RBI and Penn the 2-0 lead. The Bears responded in the home half with a home run of their own, cutting the lead to just one.

Brown took a 4-2 lead in the next inning with three more runs and added two more in the bottom of the sixth. Once again, Penn was down to its final chance.

With runners in scoring position -- senior captain Sydney Turchin at third and junior Kanani Datan at second -- Joyner came to the plate with two outs. She finally found a pitch she liked and cleared the deck with a shot to left center. The Red and Blue were within one run, 6-5.

Sargent and Raby posted back-to-back singles, and senior captain Vanessa Weaver came to the plate. On the second pitch, Weaver ripped one down the left field line but the home ump called it foul. Returning to the plate, she flied out to right field, ending the rally and the game.
