Latycheva and Daniel Edged in ITA Regional Final

HANOVER –For the second time in her career, Sonya Latycheva played for an ITA Regional championship after she partnered with Kana Daniel for a run to the championship doubles match.

The Quaker paiing dropped the first set to Dartmouth's Taylor Ng and Kristina Mathis, 6-2, but put together a strong second set and tied the match with a 6-3 victory. In the third set, neither side had true control, but the edge went to Ng and Mathis, 11-9, for a final score of 2-6, 6-3, 9-11.

Latycheva and Daniel rallied in the semifinals on Monday to defeat Brown's Alyza Benotto and Dayna Lord, 0-6, 7-6(6), 10-3 to reach Tuesday's final. Benotta, the 2015 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, and Lord, a two-time first-team All-Ivy player in singles, held an early lead over Penn's duo, but the Quakers rallied for the win.

The advancement to the championship match mirrors Latycheva's run in 2012 where she and Sol Eskenazi won the ITA Regional title and earned an automatic bid to the ITA National Indoor Championships.

"The play of Sonya and Kana mirrors the great fall we have had," head coach Sanela Kunovac said. "We had an amazing result at our home tournament, and have showed tremendous signs of progress as a group. I know those two are excited to play in the championship match and show that they are the best team in the region."

Kana Danielalso advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA Northeast Regionals, defeating the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year in the process.

Daniel won twice on Saturday, opening with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win over Binghamton’s Rachel Horton. In her second win, Daniel silenced the home crowd with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over the 2015 Ivy League Player of the Year, Dartmouth’s Taylor Ng.

On Sunday, Daniel's run in singles came to an end with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Gabriela Knutson of Syracuse.
