Tewaaraton Award Watch List
PHILADELPHIA - Penn enters the 2012 women's lacrosse season as five-time defending Ivy League champions and looking to add a six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this season. The Quakers will do so on the strength of their two seniors - co-captains Erin Brennan and Emily Leitner.
The two are among the best in the country at their respective positions and were recognized as such on Wednesday with their selection to the 2012 Tewaaraton Award Watch List as the nation's best collegiate lacrosse player.
Brennan was on the Watch List in 2011, making the cut to the list of official nominees as part of a second-team All-American campaign where she led Penn in goals (34), assists (18) and points (52). A first-team All-Ivy performer in 2010 and 2011, Brennan was the 2009 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and has twice been named first-team All-Region. One of the premier attackers in the history of Penn lacrosse, Brennan enters the season fifth all-time in points by a Quaker with 153. She is also eighth all-time in goals with 93 and fifth in assists with 60.
Leitner, second-team All-Region and second-team All-Ivy in 2011, is back for her second full season as starter in the cage for the Red and Blue. In 2011, Leitner started all 17 games and posted an 11-6 record. She ranked first among Ivy League goalkeepers in goals-against average at 8.38 - a mark which was seventh in the country. She is one of six goalkeepers on the list.
Overall, 53 players were named to the Watch List, including nine from the Ivy League. Penn is one of four Ivy schools with two players on the list, and 21 of the remaining 51 players tabbed by The University Club in Washington are members of teams Penn will take on this season. The Quakers enter the 2012 season ranked No. 11 by the IWLCA in the preseason poll, with seven of 14 regular season games waiting against Top-20 teams this season.
