PRINCETON, N.J. – After opening Ivy League South Division play with a 3-1 series win over Cornell this past weekend, the University of Pennsylvania softball team saw junior captain Lauren Li and freshman Jurie Joyner add weekly honors to their resumes. Announced by the Ivy League on Tuesday afternoon, Li collected her second Player of the Week honor this season while Joyner earned her third consecutive Rookie of the Week accolade.

This week’s awards come as no surprise as the two players continue their banner seasons staying hot and leading the Quakers at the plate. Both are hitting over .400 and slugging over .650. Having a nine-game hit streak already this year, Li is currently at four. Joyner’s longest hit streak was 10 and she is currently at six.
Batting .416 this season, good for third in the Ivy League, Li produced big numbers against the division rival, going 7-for-12 at the plate. She drove in a total of seven runners, four of which were in the finale against the Big Red. In the top of the second, the LA native gave Penn the first lead of the day at 2-1 with a triple and then later brought the Quakers within one run in the top of the sixth. Li soon after scored the tying run off a Joyner home run, as the freshman came across home for the 7-6 lead. It was the McDonough, Ga.’s second of the series and fifth home run against an Ivy League opponent. Joyner has now hit a home run against four of the five Ancient Eight teams the Red and Blue have played so far: Harvard (1), Brown (1), Yale (1), Cornell (2).
In conference contests alone, the two are keeping a steady pace at the plate. Li leads the team, batting .488 with Joyner right behind her at .487. Both are also the only two Quakers who have reached double-digits in RBI. Joyner, who leads the League with 28, has notched 22 of them in League play, while Li, who is third in the League with 24, has 19.
