PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Pennsylvania lightweight eight crew continued a breakout fall season by winning two races over the weekend. The crew firstdominated the Head of the Schuylkill on Saturday before cruising to a four-second victory at the Princeton Chase on Sunday.
Rowing on the Schuylkill River on Saturday under the Quaker Rowing Club affiliation, the Quakers ran away with the Championship Open Eights race, winning in 12:12.27, more than 26 seconds up on the second place University of Delaware Crew. The Penn B team also took sixth in that race in 12:52.23.
On Sunday, Penn survived its toughest test of the year so far by coming on strong in the finalmile of the course to win in a time of 13:37.19. Navy took second in 13:41.24 while Yale 13:42.47 took third, with Harvard 37 one-hundrenths of a second back and Princeton 20 one-hundreths back in fifth.
"We started between Navy and Yale," said Head Coach Mike Irwin. "Both of them moved on us in the first mile, but we really buckled down to win by four seconds."
Penn returns to Princeton to wrap up the fall season on Nov. 13 at the Belly of the Carnegie.
